Mathematics

The Basic (Intermediate) Program, which extends the K-6 continuum, delivers basic competencies and relates math broadly to real life situations.  More specifically, the goals of the math education program are to:

1.  Develop mathematical competence to function effectively in today's society.

2.  Develop understanding of the importance and relevance of mathematics in the world today.

3.  Develop ability to think critically and to solve problems.

4.  Nurture intellectual curiosity and the desire to continue learning.

Below are the possible routes for Math courses from 7th grade to 9th grade.
A chart showing different math classes that can be taken in 7th and 8th grade.

7th grade Math Courses

MATHEMATICSGRADE 8      REQUIRED
(YEAR LONG)    MMX0750

OBJECTIVES:
1.  Develop understanding of number relationships.

2.  Develop proficiency with the four basic operations applied to rational numbers and polynomial expressions.

3.  Develop precision with algebraic terminology and notation.

4.  Develop ability to solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable graphically and algebraically.

DESCRIPTION:
This course is required of all students in grade 7.  Emphasis is on developing proficiency with pre-algebra concepts and skills involving number and operations.  It develops proficiency in numbers and operations, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, and patterns functions.  Learning in these areas will support the development of student proficiency in all of the grade 6 to 8 strands of the Common Core State Standards.

MATHEMATICS HONORSGR 8      TEACHER RECOMMENDATION
(YEAR LONG)    MMX0750HNR

OBJECTIVES:
1.  Develop understanding of number relationships.

2.  Develop proficiency with the four basic operations applied to rational numbers and polynomial expressions.

3.  Develop precision with algebraic terminology and notation.

4.  Develop ability to solve linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables graphically and algebraically.

DESCRIPTION:
This course is an accelerated course open to seventh grade students who are accepted into the Honors program at Kailua Intermediate School.  It is an accelerated pre-algebra course designed to prepare students for the algebra course in the 8th grade Honors program.  It develops proficiency in numbers and operations, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, and patterns functions.  It follows the Common Core State Standards identified strands.  Concepts are developed using concrete examples and translated to conceptual understanding.  The program stresses algorithmic development and understanding of the underlying principles.

PREREQUISITE:   Student selection and placement approval into the Honors program including signing of Honors expectations contract.

8th grade Math Courses

MATHEMATICSGRADE 8      REQUIRED
(YEAR LONG)    MMX0850

OBJECTIVES:
1.  Review and extend understanding and skills of the K-7 program.

2.  Develop ability to recognize and apply field properties and use appropriate algorithms.

3.  Develop comprehension of the complete ordered field (real numbers) and its sub-systems.

4.  Develop precision in the use of the language of mathematics.

5.  Develop abilities to apply techniques of problem solving to all types of problems.

DESCRIPTION:
This course is required of all students in grade 8.  Emphasis is on developing proficiency with algebra based concepts and skills in number and operations; measurement; geometry and spatial sense; patterns, and functions; and data analysis, statistics, and probability.  Learning in these areas will support student proficiency in all of the grade 6 to 8 strands of the Common Core State Standards.

ALGEBRA 1  HONORSGRADE 8      RECOMMENDATION
(YEAR LONG)    MAX0800HNR

OBJECTIVES:
1.  Develop proficiency in finding products of and factoring polynomials.

2.  Develop ability to solve systems of linear equations.

3.  Develop ability to solve quadratic equations by factoring and by using the quadratic formula.

DESCRIPTION:
This course is an accelerated course open to 8th grade students who are accepted into the Honors program at Kailua Intermediate School.  This course is equivalent to the algebra course offered at the high school entry level covering the same Common Core State Standards strands.  The program emphasizes the process approach to understanding and applying the concepts of algebra.  Algorithm development is stressed and extended from previous work in 7th grade mathematics Honors course.  Students successfully completing this course will earn an 8th grade math unit and a high school math credit.  However, your grade will not reflect in your high school gpa.

PREREQUISITE:
Student selection and placement approval into the Honors program including signing of Honors expectations contract.
