Introduction to Hawaiian Cultural Crafts and Design

OBJECTIVES:

1.  Develop basic knowledge, techniques, and skills used in making culturally relevant crafts.

2.  Explore a variety of craft materials and techniques.

 

This is a one-semester introductory course providing students with opportunities to explore a limited scope of media and techniques in crafts.  Craft processes may include working with fibers, metals, synthetic bodies, clay and wood.  Cultural, geographical and historical contexts for development of crafts are explored.



Explorations in Hawaiian Language and Culture

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course helps students to become acquainted with the principles of new language learning. Students will develop awareness and appreciation of Hawaiian language and culture and gain limited experience in using simple courtesy and daily expressions. They will also have an opportunity to explore language options that may differ from the language of their elementary school experience. 


OBJECTIVES:


ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS:  Students will be graded on class participation, assignments, quizzes, projects, and tests.  They are also expected to fulfill General Learner Outcomes that include being a self-directed learner, community contributor, complex thinker, quality producer, effective communicator, and effective and ethical user of technology.



Hawaiian 1

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This year-long course is an introductory course designed to develop speaking, writing, listening and reading skills in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. Students will practice basic vocabulary and daily conversation through interactions with peers. Hawaiian culture and values will be taught through hands-on activities and group projects. This class combines 7th and 8th graders. Completion of this course with a passing grade will fulfill ONE high school language credit.
