Kailua Intermediate School Advanced Band 2022-2023

Music Program

The goal of music education is to develop in each student, as fully as possible, the ability to perform, understand, and value music. 

Kailua Intermediate offers both a beginning band and and intermediate band.  

Additionally piano class is available as an elective to students school wide. 

Beginning Band

OBJECTIVES

1.  Learn the basic elements of music.

2.  Develop skills in using musical notation in analyzing and performing music.

3.  Develop the ability to play with good tone production, rhythm, and musicality in a variety of band literatures.

4.  To perform simple band arrangements in simple key signatures and time signatures.

 

DESCRIPTION:  The course is designed for students who desire to learn to play an instrument and perform in an ensemble for an audience.  Students will learn to perform with good tone, rhythm, and musicality.

Class instruction is only offered on the following instruments: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, F horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.  Selection of instrument is based on self-discipline and responsibility, a music aptitude survey, physical characteristics, interest, overall instrumentation, and availability of instruments.  Instruments may be borrowed from the school.  Students must purchase their own textbook, mouthpiece, and other consumable supplies needed to begin instrument instruction.  Two mandatory 40-minute rehearsals will be scheduled each week during the months of November, December, January, April, and May after regular school hours.  Due to its size, the Beginning Band is split into three periods and a combined rehearsal is necessary to ensure cohesion.

 

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

1.  Develop a sense of respect and responsibility for the band as a cooperating team.

2.  Provide own textbook, mouthpiece, and necessary supplies.

3.  Learn proper care and use of instruments.

4.  Develop basic instrumental skills.

5.  Acquire an understanding of music fundamentals and vocabulary.

6.  Prepare and perform selected exercises or pieces individually and as a member of the band. 


EVALUATION CRITERIA

1.  Citizenship:  respect, responsibility, attitude, cooperation, and leadership.

2.  Promptness and class participation.

3.  Responsibility in completing assignments.

4.  Proficiency in playing musical instruments in the form of playing exams.

5.  Written exams.

6.  Individual effort and achievement.

7.  Individual practice time outside of class.

Intermediate Band

OBJECTIVES

1.  Learn the basic elements of music.

2.  Develop skills in listening, analyzing, and comparing historical and modern music.

3.  Develop the ability to play with good tone, rhythm, articulation, and phrasing in a wide variety of band literatures.

4.  Perform Western and non-Western band arrangements.


DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed for students who would like to improve their playing abilities and have fulfilled the requirements of the Beginning Band course at KIS or its equivalent at another school.  Intermediate levels of performance techniques and musicianship are taught. The development of skills and musical understanding are maintained through the study of complex rhythmic exercises and literature.

 

In addition, the Intermediate Band is involved in performing concerts for the school and community, and participates in state music festivals.  The band director will determine the student’s qualifications and acceptance into “Intermediate Band” on an individual basis.

2.  Continue development of beginning Band expectations.

3.  Further development in ear training.

4.  Develop rehearsal skills.

1.  Utilize correct hand positions.  

2.  Play piano exercises.    

3.  Participate in class daily in an individual and group setting.

4.  Complete and submit assignments promptly.

2.  Class participation.

3.  Prompt completion of assignments.

4.  Written and playing tests.

Piano

OBJECTIVES:

1.  Know the basic elements of music.

2.  Develop skills in using musical notation in performing, writing, and listening to music.

3.  Perform simple piano literature.

4.  Create simple compositions.

5.  Develop skills in reading music so students may perform their own easy piano selections.

 

DESCRIPTION:  This is an introductory course designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills in basic piano playing.  Students will perform, listen to, and evaluate “very easy” piano music.  The class piano course is designed to help students develop the knowledge of music fundamentals, develop an enjoyment of piano playing, and compose simple songs.
