Introduction to General Art
OBJECTIVES:
1. Experiment with and gain skill in the handling of a variety of art materials, tools and equipment both two- and three-dimensional art forms, with emphasis in the two-dimensional area.
2. Apply the understanding of The Elements of Art and The Principles of Design by producing original works of art in 2-D and 3-D designs.
3. Identify, analyze, and discuss works of outstanding artists in the local community, state, nation, and world.
DESCRIPTION: This is a one-semester introductory art course providing students with opportunities to imaginatively create artwork through a limited scope of media and techniques. Activities include experiences in art production and art appreciation, which leads to aesthetic sensitivity and an understanding of the interrelationships of diverse cultures as well as the personal search for meaning. This course focuses on Visual Arts Content Standards.
ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS:
1. Completion of daily and weekly assignments.
2. A sketchbook, pencils, eraser, colored pencils, color markers, scissors and ruler will be required.
3. Each student must:
a. Utilize all materials and attempt all assignments using one's own ideas.
b. Respect their artwork as well as others.
c. Clean up work area.
d. Work with other students in a cooperative manner.
EVALUATION CRITERIA: Students will be graded on completed projects, sketchbook, class participation, quizzes and work habits. Originality, ability to follow directions and craftsmanship determine the grade.
Introduction to Ceramics
Course Description: This semester-long course introduces students to the exciting world of ceramics. Students will explore various hand-building techniques, learn about the properties of clay and glazes, and develop their own artistic style. This course encourages creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression through the medium of clay.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate proficiency in basic hand-building techniques, including pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction.
Understand the stages of clay from wet clay to bisque to glazed ware.
Safely and effectively use ceramic tools and equipment.
Experiment with different glaze application methods and understand the effects of various glazes.
Develop and refine their own artistic voice and create original ceramic pieces.
Critically analyze their own work and the work of others, providing constructive feedback.
Maintain a clean and organized work space.
Course Focus: This course emphasizes the following:
Exploration: Students will be encouraged to experiment with different techniques, textures, and forms to discover their own unique approach to working with clay.
Skill Development: Students will learn and practice fundamental ceramic skills, building a foundation for future artistic endeavors.
Creative Expression: Students will be given opportunities to express their ideas and emotions through their ceramic creations.
Critical Thinking: Students will learn to evaluate their own work and the work of their peers, developing their critical thinking skills.
Studio Etiquette: Students will learn the importance of respecting materials, tools, and the studio environment, as well as collaborating effectively with their classmates.
Exploring Fashion Design & Drawing
Course Description: This semester-long course introduces students to the exciting world of fashion design and sewing. Students will explore the fundamentals of design, learn basic sewing techniques, and create their own original projects. This course encourages creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression through the art of fashion.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Understand basic fashion design principles, including elements of design (line, shape, color, texture) and principles of design (balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis).
Develop and sketch original fashion designs.
Learn and apply basic sewing skills, including hand sewing and machine sewing.
Safely and effectively use sewing tools and equipment, including sewing machines.
Understand basic pattern reading and construction.
Select appropriate fabrics and materials for their designs.
Construct simple garments or accessories.
Develop and refine their own artistic voice and create original fashion pieces.
Critically analyze their own work and the work of others, providing constructive feedback.
Maintain a clean and organized work space.
Course Focus: This course emphasizes the following:
Design Exploration: Students will be encouraged to experiment with different design elements and principles to discover their own unique approach to fashion design.
