OBJECTIVES:

1.     Engage in conversational Spanish at the store or restaurant.

2.     Demonstrate understanding (receptive language skills) of spoken and written Spanish on a variety of topics such as using a menu or beginning a new friendship.

3.     Present information and ideas to an audience through speaking and writing (production language skills) in Spanish.

4.     Application of present tense verb conjugation and basic vocabulary.

5.     Demonstrate understanding of social interaction patterns within Spanish cultures through participation in cultural activities.

6.     Apply knowledge of Spanish language and culture to further knowledge of other disciplines.

7.     Analyze and use different patterns of communication and social interaction appropriate to the setting.

8.     Demonstrate knowledge and use of the Spanish language within and beyond the school setting.

Spanish

Spanish I is for the beginning language learner or those who have had very limited exposure to the Spanish language. Students begin the study of the Spanish language and its culture by developing a basic repertoire of learned material needed to comprehend and respond to simple social situations of a daily and recurring nature. Emphasis is placed upon development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.  Students successfully completing this course will earn an elective unit and a high school foreign language credit.  However, your grade will not reflect in your high school gpa.

 


DESCRIPTION:  This is a one-year class for seventh and eighth graders who are not native speakers of Spanish. This class will provide foundational skills that will prepare participants for continued study of the language through high school.  Beginning students study language that can be used in everyday conversation. The course is taught using a communicative approach. Students will develop skills in questioning and answering each other, writing and reading about cultural events, and giving formal presentations. Students communicate about such topics as greetings, telling time, school subjects, likes and dislikes, foods, family and friends, and leisure activities. This class is conducted in as much Spanish as possible with an emphasis placed on becoming a competent communicator.  Cultural activities will include a study of bullfighting, the Day of the Dead, the 15th birthday, Christmas in Mexico, Spain and Puerto Rico as well as a closer look at Latinos in the US and the countries of Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain.

                                                                                          

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS:  Students will be graded on class participation, assignments, quizzes, projects, and tests.  They are also expected to fulfill General Learner Outcomes that include being a self-directed learner, community contributor, complex thinker, quality producer, effective communicator, and effective and ethical user of technology.

Japanese

COURSE OVERVIEW:  This year-long course is an introductory course designed to develop speaking, writing, listening and reading skills in Japanese. The Japanese writing system is taught to support simple exchanges in everyday social situations. Students will practice basic daily conversation through interactions with peers. Japanese culture and values will be taught through hands-on activities and group projects. This class combines 7th and 8th graders. Completion of this course with a passing grade will fulfill ONE high school language credit.
