Spanish

Spanish I is for the beginning language learner or those who have had very limited exposure to the Spanish language. Emphasis is placed upon development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.  Students successfully completing this course will earn an elective unit and a high school foreign language credit.  However, your grade will not reflect in your high school gpa.

 

OBJECTIVES:

1.     Engage in conversational Spanish at the store or restaurant.

2.     Demonstrate understanding (receptive language skills) of spoken and written Spanish on a 

        variety of topics such as using a menu or beginning a new friendship.

3.     Present information and ideas to an audience through speaking and writing (production 

        language skills) in Spanish.

4.     Application of present tense verb conjugation and basic vocabulary.

5.     Demonstrate understanding of social interaction patterns within Spanish cultures through 

        participation in cultural activities (eg, compare and contrast the way Halloween and Day of the 

        Dead is celebrated, compare and contrast the Christmas traditions in Mexico, Spain and 

        Puerto Rico, etc)

6.     Apply knowledge of Spanish language and culture to further knowledge of other disciplines.

7.     Analyze and use different patterns of communication and social interaction appropriate to the 

        setting.

8.     Demonstrate knowledge and use of the Spanish language within and beyond the school setting.

                                                                                                                       

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS:  Students will be graded on class participation, assignments, quizzes, projects, and tests.  They are also expected to fulfill General Learner Outcomes that include being a self-directed learner, community contributor, complex thinker, quality producer, effective communicator, and effective and ethical user of technology.



Explorations in Spanish Language and Culture

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course helps students to become acquainted with the principles of new language learning. Students will develop awareness and appreciation of Spanish language and culture and gain limited experience in using simple courtesy and daily expressions. They will also have an opportunity to explore language options that may differ from the language of their elementary school experience.

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS:  Students will be graded on class participation, assignments, quizzes, projects, and tests.  They are also expected to fulfill General Learner Outcomes that include being a self-directed learner, community contributor, complex thinker, quality producer, effective communicator, and effective and ethical user of technology.



Japanese 1

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This year-long course is an introductory course designed to develop speaking, writing, listening and reading skills in Japanese. The Japanese writing system is taught to support simple exchanges in everyday social situations. Students will practice basic daily conversation through interactions with peers. Japanese culture and values will be taught through hands-on activities and group projects. This class combines 7th and 8th graders. Completion of this course with a passing grade will fulfill ONE high school language credit.
